How do you silence a rangehood?

Since the generated by the rangehood comes from the fan unit, it stands to reason that, to silence it, you have to remove the fan. Since the fan is essential top draw air, a replacement has to be placed somewhere else. Somewhere that the noise will not be heard or at least be less intrusive. Remote fans can be placed in the loft, on the roof or even under the floor.

The illustrations below illustrate how this works.

Is it possible to have a truly silent rangehood?

Although some rangehoods are quieter than others, they all make an intrusive noise.  The noise of rangehoods is  mostly generated by the fan motor, which in the vast majority of cases, is situated inside the rangehood. The rangehood body acts as a sound amplifier, making the noise of the fan even worse. The movement of air is the secondary noise generated by its passage though the filters and ducting.

Remove the fan and the rangehood will fall silent. However, it will also stop drawing air. Mount the motor remotely and the noise of the fan goes or at least diminishes dramatically, but the noise of the moving air can still be heard. The further away the motor is, the less likely it is to be heard. The difference is that between a roar and a whisper. But even if the fan can’t be heard, there is still a noise to be heard from the rangehood. The whisper of moving air.

So if you wish to remove cooking fumes and grease from your kitchen and home, you still have to put up with the whisper of the air. So it could be said that a truly silent rangehood (one that is actually working that is) is impossible to achieve. But what do you prefer, a whisper or a roar?

Our rangehoods therefore can best be described as whispering rather than silent. You don’t have to listen to the rangehood. You’ll just hear air moving efficiently and quietly through it.

The quietest configuration is likely to be that of fig. 1 above, where the motor is outside of the house altogether. Roof mounting with a straight flue also gives the most efficient extraction.

Hush Air System Silent Rangehoods

Our rangehoods and canopies are carefully selected from a number of suppliers and modified for remote motoring. They carry no branding so they can easily blend in with your other kitchen appliances and not clash with branded products you might have. They controls and lights operate just like any other rangehood but with no noisy fan unit inside, they’re silent.

Remote motors

Like our rangehoods and canopies, the remote fans are carefully selected for the purpose. To achieve the quality, quietness, efficiency and reliability we demand, they are designed specifically for remote motoring and sourced from Europe and New Zealand.
